If you had a way of checking air fuel trims (short and long term) ... otherwise maybe a vacuum leak or a source of unmetered air coming from the secondary air injection system?

Lame... is it easy to find/diagnose? Or will this require a scanner or shop?

The idle jumps about 200 RPM occasionally, first noticed it after topping the oil off last night. vacuum also looks good. It doesn't happen when the car is driving though.

I have a feeling it's the air injection system. A quick search on the code came up with that, Vacuum looks normal to me.

given the 4 years of ownership my father had so far, yup.

I have a 2006 1 Series, and it is very reliable. Never had an issue with it, just normal maintenance.

The car in question is also a 2006, but all issues so far have been minor. worst thing that happened was a blown ignition coil.

that too. I'm tempted to send it in to get fixed.

Next cold start check to see if the air pump kicks on. Also check all of your vacuum lines. Beyond that you will probably need some testing tools and knowledge of the system.
The other way to fix it would be to trade it in for a Mercedes ;)

It still does it with a warm engine, and the rough idle is intermittent. Also about the air pump, I got a quick intro into them on a Cadillac STS with a scantool last year. Might need one to diagnose this issue.
and yeah, I'll see if I can get my father to get an AMG if all fails.

The idle and CEL may not be related. Air injection issues don't usually cause a rough idle in my experience. But they could if the valves are constantly stuck open. But I'm not BMWtech, so could be wrong.
I would be happy to answer questions or make recommendations if it comes to that.
